JEERING onlookers goaded a teenager in Britain to jump to his death, undermining police efforts to
talk him down, and then took pictures of the body.
Saturday the27th september as 17-year-old Shaun Dykes prepared to jump from the top of a
multi-storey carpark in Derby, northern England, spectators allegedly shouted to him: "How far can
you bounce?", the UK's MailOnline reports.
As Mr Dykes hesitated for three hours on the ledge while police unsuccessfully tried to reason him
out of taking his life, teenagers who had gathered below shouted "Jump" and "Get on with it",
according to police and witnesses.
Then after Mr Dykes lay in a crumpled heap on the pavement the same hecklers rushed out from behind
the police cordon to take photos of the body.
"When he (Dykes) fell, lots of people were screaming and crying but there were several groups of
youths who ran from behind the cordon and looked like they were taking pictures with their mobile
phones," a local shopkeeper was quoted as telling the MailOnline.
"I found that sickening - why would anyone want to take pictures of something like that?"
Mr Dykes was believed to have been suffering from depression and struggling to overcome a
relationship breakdown.
Superintendent Andy Hough, of Derbyshire police, said he was disappointed and disturbed by the
people heard encouraging Mr Dykes to jump.
"I find it a disturbing and shocking reflection on society when people feel inclined to do that,"
Supt Hough told the MailOnline.
"Negotiators were working with the man threatening to jump and it was their job to talk to him in
the hope of changing his mind.
"We really need the public to work with us, not against us. It was a very disappointing situation."

Shaun,
The news of what the "social conscience" offered you on Sept 27th greeted me recently as a small article in my local paper half a world away. Despite over a decade of encapsulating emotion to permit me to do my job, the thought of what you endured in your final hours genuinely upset me.
Regardless of what caused the group dynamic on that fateful day, the worldwide chorus of moral outrage to it should give us hope that good still prevails within us. I only wish you got to see more of it when you needed it most.
My heartfelt condolences to your family and friends. Although I never knew you, given the number of tributes to your all-too-short life,
you must have been a special person. RIP Shaun.
If roses grown in heaven
Lord, please pick a bunch for me.

One of Rebecca's loves was writing and reading poetry. As it is National Poetry day today, I just wanted to share with you one of her poems that she wrote when she was 8 years old. Her Teacher asked the class to write a poem about a part of their body:-
On our bodies there are two layers of skin,
One layer is fat and one layer is thin.
Out skin starts to stretch when our bones start to grow
And goosepimples come when the wind starts to blow.
Some skin is yellow, some skin is white,
Some skin is dark and some skin is light.
Our nails are a skin, a special kind too.
I have got them and so have you.
But it doesn't really matter what colour your skin;
It's not what's on the outside but what is within.
