JEERING onlookers goaded a teenager in Britain to jump to his death, undermining police efforts to
talk him down, and then took pictures of the body.
Saturday the27th september as 17-year-old Shaun Dykes prepared to jump from the top of a
multi-storey carpark in Derby, northern England, spectators allegedly shouted to him: "How far can
you bounce?", the UK's MailOnline reports.
As Mr Dykes hesitated for three hours on the ledge while police unsuccessfully tried to reason him
out of taking his life, teenagers who had gathered below shouted "Jump" and "Get on with it",
according to police and witnesses.
Then after Mr Dykes lay in a crumpled heap on the pavement the same hecklers rushed out from behind
the police cordon to take photos of the body.
"When he (Dykes) fell, lots of people were screaming and crying but there were several groups of
youths who ran from behind the cordon and looked like they were taking pictures with their mobile
phones," a local shopkeeper was quoted as telling the MailOnline.
"I found that sickening - why would anyone want to take pictures of something like that?"
Mr Dykes was believed to have been suffering from depression and struggling to overcome a
relationship breakdown.
Superintendent Andy Hough, of Derbyshire police, said he was disappointed and disturbed by the
people heard encouraging Mr Dykes to jump.
"I find it a disturbing and shocking reflection on society when people feel inclined to do that,"
Supt Hough told the MailOnline.
"Negotiators were working with the man threatening to jump and it was their job to talk to him in
the hope of changing his mind.
"We really need the public to work with us, not against us. It was a very disappointing situation."

family and loved ones and all who knew you xx But one thing we do know you are safe, well, and too

My daughter couldnt bear this world, people are truly sick. They should be punished for what they have done to this poor boy who needed help, not jeers. Rest in peace Shaun. Love julie (victoria langley mum) x x x x

i heard this on the news can you imagine how is family must be feeling to hear that people(SCUM) was heckling him to jump,these scum are some ones children,may there parents hang there heads in shame to have given birth to scum,and never have to endure what they did to this boy by losing a child,its true when they say the good die first,and all the evil are left on earth,when they have children of there own they will realise what lifes about,my thoughts to the family,

first n foremost id like 2 tell the people who encourage shaun 2 do it that they are complete SKUM n nothin more they dont deseave to be on this earth whera as shaun obviously did.the wrong person obviously died in this situation.
na i would like 2 say sorry n that my heart goes out 2 es friends n family i recently lost a very close friend to suicide n it almost destroyed me,i miss n cry everyday for im so i kinda no how it feels hope u find the strengh within urselfs 2 more on n old ur chin up high as shaun was obviously a very good human az e was taken so soon from you.

I did not know Shaun personally, but i felt the need to tell the people out there who convinced him to jump that you are strange, sad and frankly evil people. What a life this poor soul had ahead of him.. and yet.. in a little time, unfortunately and cruelly taken away.
I hope you live your life with a mind of guilt which should be alot to deal with. Im sure you all did this because you thought you were cool.. but everyone in the world thinks your cruel evil people who should rot in hell.. Sorry to shauns family x Hope you get well and recover from this tragic incident

How cruel can these animals(even thats too good for them)be to do such an evil thing? God only knows the answer & only He can forgive them. God Bless you dear Shaun,Im thinking of you & thinking so much of your family friends & anyone involved in trying to talk Shaun down. I wish someone had been able to do that for my brother. He also ended his life by stepping off the top of a multi storey car park in Sept.2006. I miss him every minute of every day. I know Shauns family miss him too. God Bless them all. I cried tears of anger when I saw the news story today concerning Shaun. Words cannot adequately express my disgust and horror at the pond life who encouraged this vulnerable young man to end his life. I offer my condolences to Shaun's family and friends and pray that Shaun is at peace now.
